Who are you and what do you do?

  1. Kim Cox. I’m a woman of many traits. I share my entire life with strangers because I have no filter… but that’s enabled me to make meaningful connections with amazing people. As far as business, I make dreams come true -- literally. I own Mattress by Appointment of Scottsdale and Chandler where we specialize in selling mattresses by appointment.

  2. I am also a new Commercial Realtor with KW Commercial where I help small business owners lease and purchase commercial properties.

What’s your favorite part of the work you do?

  1. I'm all about relationships. Most mattress purchases come during tough times-- a move, a divorce, a graduation. While some of it is happy, there are a lot of sad life transitions happening. I love providing a concierge mattress buying experience, by appointment only, where people can feel safe to lay on mattresses where it could otherwise be a vulnerable purchase, it is nice to be a safe space.

  2. As for real estate - Helping small business owners figure out their needs and move into the best space for their business is an incredible journey. As a business owner myself I have rented commercial property for 10 years and am familiar with the leasing process and can't wait to help others in the same boat.

What’s the story behind the name of your brand Sometimes a Mom?

Sometimes a Mom was born from my foster care journey—when a stranger asked if I had kids, my honest reply was, “sometimes.” It stuck, because it perfectly captures the reality of balancing motherhood, business, and life’s chaos. Today, it’s also a platform where I share free resources and offer coaching programs built on my four pillars: being mindful, playful, brave, and supportive.

It made me laugh in the moment, but the truth behind those words stuck with me. For foster moms, there are seasons of having kids in your home and seasons when you don’t—and that “sometimes” can feel both heartbreaking and strangely accurate.

Over time, I realized Sometimes a Mom was more than a quirk of foster care. It captures the reality of so many women balancing motherhood with careers, relationships, personal goals, and the constant curveballs life throws at us. It’s about holding the beauty and strength of being “everything” while also giving ourselves permission to just focus on one responsibility at a time.

“Mom” is one of the toughest titles out there—and in today’s world, it often comes with an identity crisis as we juggle multiple roles. Sometimes a Mom is my way of saying: you don’t have to be everything, all at once, to be enough.

Today, it has grown into a platform I’m building to provide both free resources and personalized coaching opportunities with me—the slightly crazy lady who’s been through it all and is still standing. I offer structured programs built around my four core pillars: being mindful, playful, brave, and supportive. These aren’t just nice words—they’re the tools I’ve leaned on to rebuild my own life, and now I get to share them with women who are navigating their own storms and dreams.

TL;DR: Sometimes a Mom was born from my foster care journey—when a stranger asked if I had kids, my honest reply was, “sometimes.” It stuck, because it perfectly captures the reality of balancing motherhood, business, and life’s chaos. Today, it’s also a platform where I share free resources and offer coaching programs built on my four pillars: being mindful, playful, brave, and supportive.

Astrological Sign or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator? Hogwarts House also accepted.

Libra and Ravenclaw -- I've never done Myers-Briggs... kind of feel like I'm missing out!

How has your identity shaped the way you run your business?

Because I am a relationship based person -- I keep things fun and exciting. My kids say I only hire "funny" people. I take pride in helping women succeed in life whether they work for me or not. I am detail oriented, creative and hard working. I'm not scared to learn new things which have helped me create systems and processes for my business that were not taught.

Early bird or night owl? Do you keep a regular schedule?

I prefer to stay up late and sleep in -- although lately I have been doing the opposite. [It's] funny how certain goals get me out of bed now. We'll see how long it lasts. haha! My schedule is whatever I need it to be. While it is somewhat structured, I definitely bend here and there -- especially if food is involved.

What’s one piece of advice you'd give to someone starting a business today?

Being consistent is more important than being perfect.

What's your proudest “I did that!” moment?

Oh man -- there are a lot. Probably my proudest moment, that has also pushed me the most, was realizing I was codependent, and then taking what felt like one million tiny steps towards leaving a toxic relationship, and now finding myself free from the weight that was on my shoulders - 16 years later!

My light is no longer dimmed and I am ready to take over the world. There are many business accolades I could put here, but without freeing myself from a hard situation, it would have been impossible to accomplish the other things.

Do you have a “Get Amped” song or mantra before an important meeting or event?

  1. "If you build it, they will come." -- This is my Field of Dreams mantra I tell myself all the time as a business owner. Reminding me that I will and can attract my tribe.

  2. As far as music, I LOVE all kinds. Hard to pick one song, but a friend once told me my theme song was, "Hustlin'" by Rick Ross.

What goals or dreams are you still chasing?

I am building an online empire for women. I jokingly call it my "Kimpire". A place for non-traditional moms (I adopted my kids through foster care), women that have left toxic relationships, and female business owners.

I want to create a safe space for women going through ALL the things with free resources, and personalized coaching opportunities. Along with all that, I'd like to share my memoirs on life-- where it is a mix of sadness but mostly fun and inspiring. Reaching goodness to all corners of the world-- and if I do it right, it will also provide passive income for my family, and maybe my kids can learn more about business ownership along the way.

What’s a totally unrelated skill you have that no one expects?

hmm... I don't know if this counts but my sister and I pulled over a drunk driver once.

Do you have any business rituals—lucky socks, specific playlists, dance breaks? Or a self-care ritual you swear by (even if it’s just snacks and silence)?

Ok, seriously, I love magnesium supplements when I feel overwhelmed and hiking when I need a break from computer screens -- and people.

What’s your go-to local spot when you're not working?

Papago park -- there's a top-secret trail I hike and a rock I sit on to journal while all the world buzzes around me. It's my favorite!
